Izba Build Recap: Interior Staining and Ceiling Insulation

Interior Staining

After getting the house wrap installed and spending some more time in the house, I realized I wasn’t happy with how the posts and beams looked next to the crisp pine sheathing. I decided to stain the wood darker for more contrast. Ideally I would have done this before we framed the walls, but with the help of some 2″ wide painter’s tape I was able to stain the posts, beams, and angle braces without getting too much stain on my nice pine sheathing. I used Minwax gel stain in Chestnut, applied with a rag and am super pleased with how it turned out.

Ceiling Insulation

Once I finished staining the posts and beams, it was time to install the ceiling sheathing. We used the same insulation in the ceiling that we had in the floor: kraft-faced R-21 fiberglass batt insulation.

Getting the insulation up into the ceiling and secured to the rafters proved to be physically exhausting and fairly difficult, but Sasha and I managed to get it all installed over the course of a day. We discovered part-way through the installation that we did not have enough insulation to finish the ceiling, so we had to make another trip to SK Lumber to get more insulation. Of course, we only needed a couple of additional batts, so now I have about 3/4 of a bag of insulation I need to find a use for.
